Start by importing existing item files and seeing how they're constructed, note the style, colour palettes, etc. Lots of item files can be found via. Timelapses can be found via. Design guidelines? No dolls or bodyparts.
No copyrighted stuff.* Keep the items appropriate. Stay under 12 points per layer. Try to stay under 30 layers. Keep overlapping shapes to the minimum. Make things thick enough, lots of tiny/thin shapes cause collision problems.
Try to think of unique designs. There are already three dozen blunt melee weapons that all do the exact same thing. Stick to a mild colour palette. Only use neon colours if it's 'the thing' of the item (such as a pink hoverboard or bright plastic water gun.) Most guidelines have some wiggle-room, e.g. 32 layers is a-ok, but 100 is not. Also avoid using pure black (not visible in several environments) and neon colours (generally ugly). Study the existing models and feedback.
