If you like Hauppauge's TV tuners but don't necessarily want to install a PCI card in your computer—or you have a laptop—the WinTV HVR 950Q is a USB alternative. Does the Hauppauge understand the Dish DVR, or are you merely recording an input stream using it? My guess is that it's the latter. So you're asking for an alternative frame grabber? I currently use (there are newer variants) the Avermedia Live Gamer Portable. I'm a Linux user.

When combined with a powered splitter I can remove HDCP and record 720p standalone. When connected to Windows it can record 1080p, but because I don't like Windows, I mainly use it standalone to record 720p. It records to an SD card. Then I pop the card and process the capture via (whatever) into my Plex server. Maybe that's not 'great', but it's very utilitarian. Allowed me to capture Marvel's Daredevil for storage on my Plex server (for example). When connected to Windows, the Avermedia will record straight to file on your Windows box at 1080p (no SD card needed).
